About EMF
Electromagnetic Fields 101
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) occur naturally throughout our environment producing direct current (DC) phenomena like lightning and the earth’s magnetic poles. The different types of man-made alternating current (AC) EMF are defined by frequency, or how long it takes for a wave to finish one cycle, measured in hertz.
The electromagnetic spectrum illustrates extremely low frequencies on the left used by the electric power grid. Radio and microwave frequencies in the middle are used in modern wireless devices. Visible light represents a small slice of the spectrum, and very high frequencies like x-rays are on the right.
EMF are further defined by whether or not they possess enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules. This ability is referred to as ionizing radiation, located on the right side of the spectrum, and has long been recognized as being biologically harmful with too much exposure.
EMF without enough energy to break molecular bonds are referred to as non-ionizing radiation, and have been traditionally regarded as safe. However, there is a growing body of scientific evidence revealing harmful biological effects from exposures to non-ionizing radiation as well (see below).
Electric and magnetic fields are generated by the electricity flowing throughout common household wiring and appliances. Wireless devices of all kinds emit radio or microwave radiation. EMF can also be permeating from nearby high-voltage power lines, antennas, cell towers, or neighboring homes and businesses.
The U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute chronicled thousands of references to effects on man of non-ionizing radiation over fifty years ago.
The World Health Organization has recognized since 2011 that radio frequency electromagnetic fields from wireless phone use are possibly carcinogenic to humans.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program conducted a 10-year $30 million study and found that exposure to levels of EMF used in cellphones was associated with clear evidence of an association with tumors in the hearts of male rats.
The BioInitiative Report, a review of hundreds of studies conducted by independent scientists and health experts from around the world, found evidence of brain tumor risks from cell phones, damage to DNA and genes, effects on memory, learning, behavior, attention, fertility and reproduction; sleep disruption and elevations of cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s at very low EMF exposure levels compared to the established international safety guidelines.
There are many reasonable steps that can be taken to minimize exposure to EMF for yourself and those around you, without giving up the modern conveniences of technology.
